Hello there.
Sorry I haven’t blogged recently - all kinds of stuff going on!
I have a new iMac computer now. A lot of it is quite different to my slow old PC, so it’s taking me a while to figure everything out - and next week I’m going up town for a one-to-one training session, which should help. My wife Claudia is finding it trickier because she really understands how PC computers work, so she has a lot of stuff to unlearn and relearn. Which I don’t - because I NEVER knew how the old computer worked and I’d be forever yelling “Claudia! The computer’s broken again!” and she’d come in and say, “No, it isn’t, get out of the way!” and five minutes later it would all be fixed. Claudia is the perfect proof of how great being married can be! Oh, and she was out last night with a pal of hers for a midnight performance of Shakespeare’s Macbeth (oops - I think I should have called it “The Scottish Play” to ward off bad luck…or is that just for actors…?). She saw it at the rebuilt Globe Theatre (It’s an exact replica of the Shakespeare Theatre that was on the same site in the 16th Century but burned down a long long time ago.) She got home about 3:22 in the morning. I woke up for no reason two minutes before she opened the door - I think I’m getting like a cat where Claudia is concerned - I know when she’s coming home. Anyway, before she collapsed into bed, she said it was a fantastic performance. I’ll find out more when she wakes up, I hope.
What I actually set up this blog to tell you is that I have a new book out. It actually came out two days ago - but before you start wondering what book this could possibly be - it’s a non-fiction rewrite of a book I first wrote with a colleague of mine way back in 1994 - it’s called WRITE A CHILDREN’S BOOK AND GET IT PUBLISHED - and its part of the “Teach Yourself” range of books. You can check it out by going to www.teachyourself.com. Now, over the past months, since I set my website up, I’ve had plenty of people asking me for writing tips, or advice on how to get started writing, or how to turn an idea into a proper story. Well, for any of you interested in that kind of thing, this is a good book for you to read. (Modesty prevents me from telling you its the best one out there - but I do think it gives a lot of insights into the whole business of writing for children - up to and including what we call in the UK Young Adult (teenagers, to you) - and also explains the kinds of pitfalls and problems you will encounter as a new writer trying to get your work published.)
If you are interested in this book, I’d recommend you buy (or borrow) the 2010 update - the older versions that you might find on Amazon etc are pretty badly out of date now. Believe it or not, when we wrote the first version, we had to explain what the internet was! (”Some people even write on computers these days - and there is this new invention out there called the world wide web, which is full of useful information.”) Yes, just sixteen years ago, most people had to have the internet explained to them, it’s true.
What else? Oh, I’ve finished the rewrites of Warrior Princess 4 (very few - they really liked it) - and it is now about to wing its way over the Atlantic to be looked at by the American editors in New York.
Oh, and we finally got the DVD of Alice In Wonderland - and watched it - and totally loved it. As some of you may already know, I am a total Alice in Wonderland freak - I have the two books (wonderland and Through The Looking-Glass) as hardback copies, I have them unabridged on talking books, I have a radio play of it, I have an Alice in Wonderland chess set, I have pictures on the walls, and I have ornaments of the Mad Hatter, White Rabbit and Alice as well as a bass-relief of the Mad Tea Party. And I also have five versions of different Alice in Wonderland movies on DVD, going all the way back to 1933! Although the Tim Burton version tells a different story than the original books, I thought it was great. Okay, I’m done talking about Alice now - in fact, I’ve kept you reading now for long enough, I think, so I shall disappear now…bit…by…bit…until only…my…grin…is……left….
oh the chesser cat! hahaha your funny. claudia is funny too =) yay first one! (in america)
I am happy that Tim Burton kept to the descriptions and feel of Carroll’s novels. It was deliciously wonderful.
AFJ. Tracy - I agree absolutely - the spirit of the original books certainly survived the transition - and I especially liked the March Hare’s Scottish accent.
Some people still have to have the internet explained to them. I live on the Gulf Coast, and they’re hiring people to clean up this big oil mess. They hired this one girl who couldn’t figure out how to pull up the internet. My mom ranted about it for days ‘How could they hire someone who can’t even use a computer!?’ But I digress.
My friends will probably make fun of me because I’m already in a publishing contract, but I’m still going to read your new book–just because I’m a book fanatic. I also saw the new version of Alice in Wonderland, and I was very surprised. The 3-d version is awesome, and Johnny Depp just blew me away. Of course, the Cheshire Cat was amazing, too. And the jabberwocky because I would’ve never thought to put that into a movie.
I am obsessed with the new Alice in Wonderland movie! I have a hat covered in Alice in Wonderland sayings, seen it three times in the movies, I have posters all over my wall, the Mad Hatter Hat….and more. This Halloween my family is all going to dress up as characters from Alice in Wonderland. My mom had dibs on the amazing Johnny Depp character (Mad Hatter) and I went with Chess the Chessire cat. The movie is amazing. So far, everyone I have talked to (except my brother) has loved that movie. Last night, we saw Avatar. Have you seen that movie? I was pleasantly surprised. It was amazing, and it didn’t seem like three hours long either. The animation was great, and it got me thinking. I wonder if anytime soon, we will have virtual realities or something similar…
reese- im so angry with the inspector who said the oil pipe was a-okay. IF I EVER GET MY HANDS ON HIM IMA GRRRRRRRR all those animals are suffering because of selfish people who only want money. go to google and type up ‘oil spill animals’ man you cant even see some of the birds because they have so much oil! hemit crabs have oil in their homes, turtles and fish come up dead on the sea shore, pelicans are drenched in oil, it doesnt stop. the louisiana marshes i heard are long gone. the dragon flies have oil on their wings!!!!! animals actually own planet earth, we just took it. humans are the weakest and most dangerous things who ever walked the planet! who agrees with me?! >=)
oh! one of my best friends is a huge alice and wonderland freak too! haha wow i really like that Daniela! and i deffinatly agree! im a huge animal lover and im my school year book they had pictures of a cat being disected by the 10th greaders i was so freaked out when i saw it! i have 3 cats so that made me want to cry!
Me…lol
AFJ. Reese - the thing about writing is that you never finish learning - I’ve been a published writer now since 1987, and I’m still learning new things all the time. I’m not saying my book has all the answers, not by a long way, but for writers starting out, it should offer some useful guidance. As you were the first person to say they were going to get a copy, how about you mail me your address from the Contact page and I send you a signed copy? I have one spare, and you sound like someone who would find it useful.
Sorry to everyone else, no more free copies at the moment - but for those interested I might be able to set up a competition.
Amy - I have seen Avatar, and as you say, the visuals are really great, but I wasn’t totally impressed by the story. It seemed to me to parallel the history of America - with the Naavi being the indigenous population and the Humans being the European settlers - I think there were plenty of parallels to that idea, what with the bows and arrows and the belief in earth spirits etc. So the idea that the blue guys could beat off the militaristic interlopers seems rather strange - given that the exact opposite really happened in America. Of course, I might have misunderstood the whole thing, so please don’t yell at me if I’m wrong.
Daniela - Claudia and I are also really freaked about what the oil spill must be doing to wildlife. So far as all other life forms on this world are concerned, Humans really are a total menace, I agree!
Daniela, your forgetting about Sea Otters. There not JUST going extinct from Oil Spills and other stuff, but humans have been hunting them for their soft fur for years that you can rarely find an adorable little Sea Otter anymore.
addie- thats why i said humans are the weakest yet dangerous things who ever walked the planet!GRRR. i mean humans kill other animals just to get a few bucks. thats what money does to us. they kill african cats for their beautiful skins. sharks for their teeth. etc…… *sheds tear* HOW LONG WILL IT BE BEFORE HUMANS KILL EARTH!?
is ther more than one type of otter?
Oh Daniela, Humans are already killing the earth. Polar Bears and Penguins are dieing because the polar ice caps are melting. Guess who caused that problem of Global Warming. You know, everybody says to blame global warming, but doing so, your blaming yourself really. It’s legit. Yes, there are a bunch of different otters. http://www.otter-world.com/types-of-otters.html
AFJ. the whole Faerie Path concept of the Mystic Arts versus the Dark Arts is to do with the uses and misuses of the resources of the natural world. An adept in the Mystic Arts like Eden, uses the resources of the world in a responsible way, whereas someone like Drake just wanted to exploit them for his own purposes. Anyone see a parallel there to the way we humans live?
hmmmmmm so could there be someone who is kind of im the middle of useing the world baddly and good? mabey someone who thinks they are doing no harm….?
AFJ. Liz - I think that most of us fall into that category, don’t we? Like, Claudia and I will always buy free range eggs and free range meat and organic vegetables when we can, but then we might buy a pre-packed sandwich or go into a restaurant, and you don ‘t know for sure what you’re eating. The whole business is very tricky, and the best you can do is to try and be aware and hope you’re not doing too much harm.
allan- how come its not called magic? why mystic arts? i forgot why. hmmmmmmm……. wow schools almost over. im actually gonna miss school. you can never get enough knowledge. you know that were all teachers? we learn from everyone. u learn something new everyday.
AFJ. Daniela - there’s a very simple reason why I avoided the word magic - it’s a two word reason. Harry Potter. I wanted to make sure there was plenty of distance between the kind of supernatural events that took place in Faerie and the kind of magic that they were taught at Hogworts. People in Faerie who learn how to use the Mystic Arts take their entire lives over it - and there would never be enough people to fill a single class, never mind a whole school.
daniela im sad that the school year is over too. (i got out june 4th) but im more sad because im switching schools and im really gonna miss my few friends that i had at the school i used to go to but i have friends at my new school sooo
I do think that it was weird how they made the military seem like the bad guys. I have actually heard that a lot, and I agree. Otherwise, I find the story intriguing. I guess its the whole love story, perhaps? I’m not sure. Or maybe its just that I am really intrigued by virtual realities and stuff…
liz- awww lucky! we get out next friday. im moving schools to. i cant wait because no one knows me there and i’ll make new friends. but i will miss my friends at my current school =(
amy- i actually heard that where there is love there is war.
Daniela-would you rather be going to a new school knowing someone or knowing no one at all?
liz- knowowing no one at all cuz no one knows me and its cool seeing how people will react to my pioneer dress!

nina ive wondered that too….
AFJ. Hello Nina, nice to hear from you. Glad you’re liking Warrior Princess. I have no idea how those clever people put pix on their comments. I’m sure someone will explain, though.
arghh. my grandma threw water at me in the car! lol she was driving and told me to be quiet and i wouldnt so… yaaaa. lol. made me think of if i could control water i wouldt be wet as im posting this! =D this is out of nowhere but when did u meet claudia allan???
ps. i am also wondering how to post up pictures…. so if anyone noes please let us no how it works!
AFJ. Daniela - I met Claudia in 1991 when we were both active in Amnesty International. We were at an Annual Conference in Liverpool and I saw her across a room and thought she was the most beautiful woman I’d even seen in my life! We got talking, but we were both involved with other people at the time. that was in February. It turned out she lived in North London (I live in South London). we met a few times on Amnesty International business and within two months we had both left our partners and were living together in my mother’s living room! We had meet exactly five times by then! We found ourselves a place to live and got married in January 1992 and we’ve been together ever since. Sometimes love at first sight DOES work!
awwwwww thats so sweet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
allan- awww thats so sweet =D maybe u and claudia met before that o.o they say u come across your true love when people are babies or children o.o wow. thats so cool =)
i wanna pic…
SUCH A CUTE STORY!!! so romanttic
allan… u should soo make a facebook page and see wat people think and how many people like ur books
The guy I like is really cute, funny, somewhat sensitive, and he’s one of those people that are “friends”, but not really. You know, I met him about 6 months ago and I was like, “oh, he’s cute”, but as I got to know him, he’s really nice. He’s sort of like me. He’s quite, unless he’s around people that he knows. He’s on my bus, in my homeroom, and I set with him at lunch. The only problem is my BFFL thinks he is the most annoying person in the world. He is to her, because she lets him mess with her. He’s really nice to me, and he does what I say. It’s really odd. I’m done now.
addie-that is a little odd…. haha i rember when one of my best friends first meet one of my really good guy friends, she told him that she liked his hair and once she left the firts thing he asked me was if she liked him i told him no but then when i met back up with my friend i was telling her about it but i didnt realize that my guy friend was standing right behind me, he freaked out…. just goes to show you to always cheak behind you before you start talking
okay, maybe i will check behind me…nope, just my dog. no zach. you see, my bffl says he is the most annoying person in the world, but he’s fun to be around. it’s true, he is. you see, i’m not much of the flirty kind of person. it’s just not me and i kind of think that flirting is really really dumb. that might be because it’s really obvious that somebody’s flirting. this girl that came and sat with us was flirting with my bffl’s boyfriend and she got really short tempered quickly. quite honestly, if she was flirting with the guy i like, she’d be dead before she knew what was happening. that’s my life.
im too young for love. =/ but im not in a rush to get a boyfriend.
what really stunk for me is that the guy i like told me that he liked this other girl but im not worried because she has a boyfriend. Daniela-i think that is a good way to live, not in a rush for things to happen….other than for books to come out
liz - lol yup i cant live without books =) and ya i want to see what kind of surprises life has for me =) rushing is like errr idk how to put it … okay say u want a pizza but in five min. your likely to get it uncooked and not at all tastey hahahahah sorry dont know how to put it XD
haha that i fine way to put it
haha thx, well first day of summer =) summer soltice a nature holiday when fairies come out and have a big party =D does the faerie kingdom celebrate june 21st?
AFJ. Daniela - they certainly do celebrate those kinds of dates. they celebrate the summer and winter solstices and the spring and fall equinoxes as well - plus a lot of extra celebrations for other special days and nights of the year - remember that big b each-party they went to a few books back? when they flew on the Cloud Scudder to the island? That was for a similar kind of celebration. The people of Faerie are really big on feasts and dances and festivals and stuff like that.
I still have school tomorrow. Last day though. We get our Report Cards and Finals Grades. I think I got an A on most of them. American Studies, Biology, and English. Maybe a B on Spanish and Algebra. Well, Wish Me Luck.
Mr. Jones,
I happened on your Faerie Series in a half price book store that had the first three books. I honestly fell in love with the first book. I have always loved anything about Faeries and have several other books concerning Faeries. I purchased the last two from Amazon and just finished “The Enchanted Quest”. These are some of the BEST books that I have EVER read. Thank you so much for sharing your world with us. I can’t wait for “The Charmed Return” to become available here in Atlanta, GA (USA). The web is saying that it will be January 2011 and I have already marked dates with reminders in my calendar on my iPhone so that I can FIND this book. Will there be more of this series? I would like to see how the lives of some of the other characters involved in this series turn out. Love it, Love it!!! You are brilliant. I like the “Mystic Arts” vs Magic as well. Too much Harry Potter (never could get into that lot, hmmmmm).
allan- man that would be awsome if we could celebrate those holidays =D i stayed up until 3′o’clock last night watching the moon. i felt so relaxed =) also i left hney out on the garden. hmmmm
addie- errr im stressed about my report card. i didnt get it yet. they dont tell us our grades which sucks =( oh btw congrats on your report card. are you in honors???
terri- i first saw mr. allan’s books in our school book fair. i didnt think much of the books, until i saw the faerie path then boom! i just had to get it =) ALLAN FREWIN JONES IS AWSOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hey guys! A lot of you have been asking how I got the pic on there….Well I put my blog in as my website, and I had a gravatar for my blog, so thats what shows up as my pic.
I just realized if you click my name…it goes to my blog =O
don’t you think the actress who played alice in alice in wonderland would make a good Zara
Daniela I’m not in Honors although I wanted to do English, American Studies, and Algebra. I’m doing one Honors next year, American Studies/History. I hope to take Advanced Preparatory United States History or A.P.U.S.H. my Junior year. My mom wouldn’t let me take more than one honors class. She doesn’t even want me to take one. I Love History!
Does anybody else take or want to take any honors classes?
